The 2024 Oscars have come and gone, and "Oppenheimer" was the big winner of the night. The elaborate Roman square had to be built twice because Elizabeth Taylor fell ill during the first attempt at production. Dante Ferretti and Francesca Lo Schiavo did an incredible job of recreating period detail throughout the life of Howard Hughes in The Aviator. Seven-time nominees Sarah Greenwood and Katie Spencer could still pull this off with “Barbie,” which could put the “Barbenheimer” craze back into full-force. The prize, along with seven other awards including three short film categories and best score, editing, makeup and hairstyling, and sound, was announced during a preshow created this year in an effort to trim down the main show. The move was widely criticized, with the Set Decorators Society of America even sending an open letter to the Academy back in February. The Grand Budapest Hotel is one of the most visually splendorous films of the 21st century – so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Adam Stockhausen and Anna Pinnock were honored by the Academy for their work on the film’s production design.
'Oppenheimer' wins best picture

Other nominees in the best director category at the 2024 Oscars included Justine Triet for "Anatomy of a Fall," Martin Scorsese for "Killers of the Flower Moon," Yorgos Lanthimos for "Poor Things" and Jonathan Glazer for "The Zone of Interest." He also thanked all the cast members including Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh and Cillian Murphy, as well as his wife, "the incredible Emma Thomas … producer of all our films, and all our children. I love you." In the lead acting categories, "Poor Things" star Emma Stone took home the award for best actress while "Oppenheimer" star Cillian Murphy took home best actor. "Oppenheimer" earned seven Oscars from its 13 total nominations, including the top prize of the night, best picture, as well as best director for Christopher Nolan. I went back and forth between putting Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and La La Land here – both are stylistic renderings of Los Angeles and both feature some excellent production design – but I decided to go with the latter because of its brilliant use of color. Perhaps it’s unfair to praise the production design in The Last Emperor too feverishly considering that some of the film was shot in The Forbidden City in Beijing, China – which would admittedly be hard to make look not magnificent.
Production Design Oscar Winners
Much of that has to do with the striking and unique look of the film, which marks the first Oscar nomination for all three of the artisans nominated in this category. What some may not realize is that this was the first time that the film’s two production designers, James Price and Shona Heath, ever worked together, but the work they’ve done is undeniable. Similarly, Hungarian set decorator Zsuzsa Mihalek populated the locations with many quirky items that greatly enhance the film’s overall look. Greenwood is the most nominated production designer in this category without a win. Her nomination for “Barbie” brings her to seven, and like the film’s costume designer, Jacqueline Durran, most of her work with director Joe Wright has garnered her Oscar nominations. Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” offers wondrous eye candy, built around Barbie Land as a feminist utopia.

The structure was then 3D-scanned and photographed so it could be implemented into their final shots. The Arizona house, meanwhile, reflects the arid desert landscape and Sammy’s increasing obsession with making movies. “Heat, the rocky terrain—we brought those colors into the house, so everything’s sort of an earthy tone,” the production designer tells us. As with the previous house, the layout was intentional, with Sammy’s room at the periphery of the house. “He was beginning to individuate and move away from the family and into his own world.” The final Craftsman-style house in Northern California was designed to evoke a “moodier, heavier kind of feel to show how Sammy was feeling trapped in that space,” Carter explains. The 26th Annual Art Director’s Guild Awards honored “Nightmare Alley,” “No Time to Die” and “Encanto” taking home top film honors.

The ADG Awards honor excellence in production design in theatrical motion pictures, television, commercials, music videos and animated feature films. Good production design can be the difference between a great film and an average film – a point proven by comparing The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies; the former have excellent production design, while the latter struggle to build a world that’s either immersive or realistic. Check out this next video to see how Peter Jackson and the production designers used miniatures to expert effect in Return of the King. Ridley Scott’s “Napoleon” biopic benefits from the elaborate period world-building of go-to production designer Arthur Max (a four-time Oscar nominee). It’s about the rapid rise to power of Napoleon Bonaparte (Phoenix) from military leader to Emperor and his obsession with Empress Joséphine (Vanessa Kirby). Max and his team recreate six major battles (including Austerlitz with horses falling through the ice and, of course, Waterloo), each with its own distinctive geometric patterns.
About the Academy Awards (Oscars)
Look at the film to see how colorful props, steampunk costumes and beautiful vistas delivered the visual tone. The production design in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea no-doubt inspired countless imitators in the decades after. Guillermo Del Toro doesn’t make movies with bad production design – it’s just not part of his M.O. His collaborators on Pan’s Labyrinth included art director Eugenio Caballero who has worked on other acclaimed projects like Roma and Pilar Revuelta who received acclaim for her work on Pedro Almodóvar’sBad Education.
There’s also a new eligibility period for the Best International Feature Film — November 1, 2023, to September 30, 2024 — and Best Original Score now allowing three composers to receive individual statuettes if, in rare circumstances, they all contributed fully to the score. Plus, the screenplay categories now require a final shooting script to be part of submissions and a handful of overall name changes and/or clarifications for some of the awards The Academy hands out at the separate Governors Awards and Scientific and Technical Awards ceremonies. With “Killers of the Flower Moon,” legendary production designer Jack Fisk worked for the first time with director Martin Scorsese. A specialist at constructing outdoor sets, Fisk (a three-time Oscar nominee) grounded the 1920s fact-based Oklahoma crime drama about the serial murders of Osage Indians on the topographical and architectural reality of their oil-rich territory. But telling the story on Osage land, either by repurposing existing structures or building them from scratch, was challenging.

Spartacus features some of the best production design of any “sword-and-sandal” film. That may not sound like glowing praise, but it absolutely is considering how great the production design was in similar films like Son of Samson, Ben-Hur, and Gladiator. “Poor Things” prevailed over “Barbie” in the fantasy production design category at the 28th Art Directors Guild Awards and is now in the driver’s seat to win the Oscar. Throughout the season, it has been a race between these two big feminist films constructed around rebirth and unconventional world-building. Variety's unmatched coverage gives its readership unbeatable exposure in print and online and provides inside reports on all the contenders in this year's awards season races.

Edward Berger’s All Quiet on the Western Front takes us into the muddy trenches of France amid World War I through the eyes of 17-year-old German soldier Paul Bäumer (Felix Kammerer), who arrives with his school friends in 1917, three years into the conflict. The story, the first German-language adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s 1929 bestseller, plays out in the French hinterland that, if not a painful reminder of the horrors of war, is an exposé on the different variants of mud. When I watch the Oscars this year, I’m hoping the famously unlucky number 13 will be lucky that night.
Distributors and/or producing teams should submit for PGA Mark Certification or awards determination as well no later than the date of the film’s first commercial screening in its qualifying run. The complex fat suit required a lot of engineering, with loads of silicone and plaster bandages to support the frame and maintain the shape, and separate work for the head and shoulders. Additionally, separate pieces were done for the neck, head, chin, cheeks, earlobes, and hand prosthetics over the knuckles. This certainly shakes up the Oscar race, with “Cruella” now the favorite and “Coming 2 America” suddenly a stronger contender. The films that won in this category most recently are “Dune” (2022), “Mank” (2021), “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” (2020), and “Black Panther” (2019). This year’s winner will be revealed during the 95th Academy Awards ceremony, airing March 12 on ABC.
The vibrant, underwater paradise of the Metkayina clan, the glitz and glam of Graceland, the bustling streets of 1920s Hollywood and more — these cinematic worlds take you on a journey like no other. George Lucas certainly deserves credit for being the visionary behind Star Wars, but he may have never been able to pull it off without the help of production designers like Barry, Reynolds, Dilley and Christian. According to the Academy, production design is just about everything that goes into the making of a film’s world. In 1947, the Academy decided to group set decoration in with art direction – ultimately leading to the change to Best Production Design. Nominations voting is from January 11–16, 2024, with official Oscar nominations announced on January 23, 2024. And finally, the 96th Oscars telecast will be broadcast on Sunday, March 10, and air live on ABC at 8 p.m.
“We assembled lots of different kinds of earth and tried to find out how it reacts to rain, how it dries out, how it looks when there was an explosion, where the different kind of earth particles fly and how they settle, as well as what color that brings to the earth,” he says. Welcome to the decadent years of showbiz in 1920s Los Angeles, as silent-era Hollywood was transitioning to talkies in Damien Chazelle’s Babylon. Fading movie star Jack Conrad (Brad Pitt) and up-and-coming actress Nellie LaRoy (Margot Robbie) are ambitious dreamers who are caught up in a milieu of outrageous excess and forced to change with the times. Theirs is a firmament of gilded ballrooms, opulent furnishings, and lush paneled bedrooms contrasted with a barren, undeveloped desert landscape just beyond. Other films nominated in the category included "Barbie," "Killers of the Flower Moon," "Napoleon" and "Oppenheimer." This awards season, Murphy has won a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild Award and a BAFTA.
One of the most challenging sets to pull off was Beale Street, a roughly two-mile stretch of downtown Memphis that became a vibrant locus for Black musical culture—the blues specifically—and a source of inspiration for a young Elvis. Martin and the team had to recreate and condense that legendary street and its storefront window displays into just two blocks, in Australia no less, and amid pandemic-era supply-chain woes. Nadia Stacey, Mark Coulier and Josh Weston were honored in the Makeup & Hairstyling category, besting MUAHS Awards winner Maestro and the teams behind Golda, Oppenheimer and Society of the Snow. Murphy accepted the Oscar from a group of previous best actor winners, including Nicolas Cage, Matthew McConaughey, Brendan Fraser, Ben Kingsley and Forest Whitaker.
